On Friday, May 15, New York University Steinhardt celebrated the doctoral class of 2015. Honorary alumnus of the Class of 1955, Herb Greenberg, Ph.D., was this year’s Honorary Alumni recipient.

After graduating from NYU, Dr. Greenberg started Caliper, a talent-management consulting firm based in Princeton, NJ. The company is best known for producing the Caliper Profile, a personality assessment developed by Dr. Greenberg that measures 22 personal attributes related to workplace behavior. Caliper has since assessed over 4 million job applicants and employees and has helped more than 30,000 companies hire and develop top performers and, in the process, transform their businesses.

“Being at NYU was an amazing experience,” said Dr. Greenberg. “It helped shape my career and is a phase of my life to which I owe much of my success.”

During his speech at the commencement, Dr. Greenberg promised that Mark Greenberg, the current President of Caliper, will continue the Caliper legacy.  The company’s message has always been, and will continue to be: In order to find their next top performers, organizations should focus on who people are, not on their past accomplishments.

“Many companies get tripped up when it comes to the resume,” said Dr. Greenberg. “And sometimes that’s the biggest mistake. The hiring choice should be about an individual’s potential and what they’re capable of doing, rather than what they’ve already done.”

Dr. Greenberg is also the New York Times bestselling author of Succeed on Your Own Terms and How to Hire and Develop Your Next Top Performer, both published by McGraw Hill. He also has a new book, authored by long-time friend and collaborator Patrick Sweeney, being released on June 19, 2015 entitled What You Aren’t Seeing – The Inspiring Story of Herb Greenberg  with the subtitle: How Using Your Hidden Potential Can Help You Discover the Leader Within.
